Anorexia Nervosa in Children
Children as young as five are being treated in hospital for severe anorexia in a shocking illustration of how early they can become obsessed with body image. A further 99 aged eight and nine were admitted over the same period, as were almost aged between ten and 12, and 1, between 13 and Shocking: Figures have revealed that nearly children aged five to seven were treating in hospital for eating disorders, showing how early they can be affected by body image. The number of under-nines needing hospital treatment has doubled in the past year.



Anorexia Nervosa
She exercised compulsively on the monkey bars. But her parents had no idea she was developing anorexia nervosa because the active girl's height and weight looked normal on the pediatrician's growth chart. Sophie complained of being dizzy, having "itchy skin" and constipation, all symptoms of malnutrition. She later confessed that she had been throwing out her school snacks and lunches.





Anorexia an-o-REK-see-uh nervosa — often simply called anorexia — is an eating disorder characterized by an abnormally low body weight, an intense fear of gaining weight and a distorted perception of weight. People with anorexia place a high value on controlling their weight and shape, using extreme efforts that tend to significantly interfere with their lives. To prevent weight gain or to continue losing weight, people with anorexia usually severely restrict the amount of food they eat.
